This route starts in Sheffield centre, working its way out into the Peaks. Passing through Forge Dam, up and over Stanage Pole and Stanage Edge, around Ladybower, Derwent and Howden reservoirs. Including some of the classic gravel routes, great views and pretty easy going for the most part.
On the way back into Sheffield, it will take you through Wyming Brook, truly epic trees to be seen (if you’re into that kind of thing), weaving through the suburbs and dropping back down into the city.
The route is around 50% off road and 95% rideable on a gravel bike. There is a hike-a-bike section in Wyming Brook, please see diversion map if you want to avoid this.
Conditions are mostly good in all-weathers however the Wyming Brook section can get a bit sloppy at times. I'd advise tyres of 35c upwards, but this route would be doable on a road bike, providing you are used to a little “rough stuff”.
Keep your eyes out for the plugholes!
Difficulty – 6/10. Mostly steady, smooth gravel.
Allow 4-6 hours for the route.
All being well, I will be doing the route starting at 9am on the 20th Feb meeting on Ball Street Bridge (start point of the route) anyone is welcome to join.
You can ride the route at any time, at your own pace, with whoever you like.
These are NOT organised group rides, you are responsible for your own actions and must prepare for all eventualities. I encourage you to study the route, download the GPX, and plan accordingly. Make the ride your own, feel free to tag Slacks Cycleworks with images and stories from your ride.
The route uses shared use trails, please be courteous of all other users, it's not a race, be nice, say hi, don't be a dick. Most of all enjoy the route, take in the views, have a good time!
